Marin Alsop is one of the world’s most distinguished orchestra conductors, not a career with significant female representation. In 2021, she released a documentary, The Conductor, that depicts her life’s journey over three orchestras: Baltimore, São Paulo and Vienna. Although she does not overemphasize institutional discrimination, she takes her own representative role seriously.
“If you’re a leader, you’re under a magnifying glass. If you don’t own who you are, you are not pushing others’ perception of what a conductor looks like.”
