At the 2021 Golden Globes, Chloé Zhao made history when she became the first Asian woman to win the award for best director. The film Nomadland, which won Best Motion Picture for Drama, catapulted Zhao to the forefront of the public eye, eliciting a powerful and supportive response. Her film went on to win an Oscar for best director, making her the first woman of color to obtain the award. She also became the first woman to get four Oscar nominations in one year for best director, best film editing, best adapted screenplay and best picture. Zhao made history for a third time when she became the first woman of color to direct a movie for the Marvel Cinematic Universe—Eternals.
