It’s not news that we are living in a world where technology is advancing rapidly. So rapidly, in fact, that a future filled with space travel and exploration, robotics and drones is closer than it’s ever been. During a recent session of The Next Normal, Worth sat down with Lisa Rich, founder and managing partner at Hemisphere VenturesAriel Seidman, CEO & cofounder of Hivemapper, and Kathleen Entwistle, private wealth advisor at Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management, to discuss groundbreaking frontier technology, why it’s worth investing in now and how it’s accelerating scientific exploration and what it means to be human.

For starters, it’s important to understand the difference between frontier tech and emerging technology.

“Hardware plus software is really the easiest way to think about it, but also just the digitization of everything,” Rich said. “It all comes down to how we kind of robotize data and apply it and translate it, so that one hardware can talk to the software.”

And with that, frontier tech is a very interesting area for investors to consider.

“I think that when you think about where we’re going, where the future is, is really what’s important,” Entwistle said. “And when you look at the investments that have worked in the past, we had, I would say that third, you know, the third revolution was our technology revolution, starting probably in the late ‘90s, early 2000s. And this is like a transformation of that revolution. It’s like another iteration of it. It’s like the fourth revolution with technology transformation, digitalization, as Lisa said. So, the idea that there are opportunities for more efficiencies for scalability and so forth is really appealing. And anytime there is something coming in the future that is going to be valuable, it means that it’s probably going to be a good investment at some point. So, clients are always looking to find those opportunities, but it’s not just about the money. It’s also about the passion. So, when we hear both Ariel and Lisa speak, I mean, it’s really clear that they’re passionate about what they’re doing. And investors are the same way; they want to invest in things that align with their priority. If space is a priority or something with a higher level of tech transformation, frontier investing, then they want to be part of that.”
