A victim of daunting upkeep and renovation costs, the building was demolished in 2013—and a new residential high-rise is taking its place. Mimicking the silhouette of the familiar structure, the contemporary revamp stretches 40 stories and 460 feet tall, and houses more than 200 apartments in its main tower, as well as four larger penthouses in the reenvisioned “barrel.”

The Henninger Turm opens this year as part of a larger mixed-use complex that will feature retail and restaurants, as well as a health club. Amenities for residents will include 24-hour concierge, private gardens and a viewof the Taunus mountains. Frankfurt celebrity chef Christian Mook will helm a new restaurant located on the 39th floor. Prices start at $6,100 per square meter.
It is surprising that high net worth buyers here are looking at skyscrapers at all. Until recently, Frankfurt power brokers made their homes in the suburbs, and high-rises were associated with subsidized housing and locatedon unattractive blocks. But with a growing population and Frankfurt’s increased visibility as a European financial hub, particularly post-Brexit, there has been a shift in perception and a high demand for upscale apartment towers. Henninger Turm, with its connection to city history, close proximity to the business district and location in the popular Sachsenhausen neighborhood, is quickly gaining attention.
