Philanthropy offers an opportunity for families to connect in a way that may be less contentious than other potentially taboo money topics, such as inheritances and personal spending habits.

Financial literacy alone is not the “magic key” to unlocking generational financial success.

Having navigated relentless worries over the health and safety of our families in 2020 means we should be able to take on just about any tough issue—even those that were previously considered contentious, such as talking about money.

Uncertainty is likely to be with us for the foreseeable future, but how we respond and adapt to that reality is within our control when we openly address our financial vulnerabilities and take steps to minimize them.

When we speak about money, we often focus on the technical aspects of our financial capabilities but being in touch with our emotional intelligence is equally, if not more, important.

Given that discussing financial goals and plans with loved ones has always been challenging for many, this time of disruption calls on us to bring new candor and focus into the family dialogue about money.

We have the ability and the knowledge to create lasting and meaningful change now. Let’s not lose this opportunity.

Both during lockdown and in our eventual “new normal,” the family unit will be the main source of reflection, knowledge and decision-making—playing a pivotal role in each member’s financial and personal journey.
