  • Wednesday, April 8, 2 p.m. ET Rebalancing Your Portfolio and Other Strategies That Could Add Value During a Crisis

The second notable moment is happening right now. At the end of December, the Buy and hold portfolio stock allocation had grown to 72%, while the Rebalanced portfolio was at 62%—within the 5% tolerance that we established. Year to date through 19 March, Buy and hold is down -17.3%, versus -14.4% for the Rebalanced portfolio, whose stock allocation has drifted back to 54%—that will trigger another rebalance, because it is more than 5% below the 60% equity target. All of this is to say that inaction is essentially market timing. Don’t let bad timing ruin your retirement plan—rebalance back to your target allocation to maintain your strategy.
