Mark Permar is an architect and planner who collaborates with professionals focused on creating communities within environmentally sensitive places. He has diverse experience in strategic master planning, programming/design, concept development and facilitating the creative process within a team format. His involvement in planning and development of Kiawah Island has spanned more than 40 years, first as Vice President of Planning and Design and has continued as an advisor to both Kiawah Partners and Kiawah Island Golf Resort. His community and resort development experience has included long term assignments with Chautauqua Institution, University of Virginia Foundation and select locations in Europe and the Caribbean. His particular experience in coastal development has led to membership with various design review boards and conservation groups charged with balancing natural and manmade environments. He is a registered architect and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati with an emphasis of the role of design in creating community.
