When retired executive William Swanson moved into a condominium in Naples, Fla., he began to plan the home office of his dreams, and the stuff of his dreams was authentic, custom designed, handcrafted hardwood.
Swanson hired the services of the Thomas Riley Artisans' Guild (239.591.3203, www.artisansguild.net), a custom cabinetry company also located in Naples, to design, craft and install the office. The result is an elegant, traditional English room done completely in cherry wood with white oak burl accents. The walls have standard raised panels, while the spaces between the beams of the coffered ceiling were given a faux finish to resemble leather.
Swanson requested a partners desk and specified the functional elements he wanted on each side. "Once we designed the room," says Joe Robbins of the Artisan Guild’s design and engineering team, "we took details from the wall panels and incorporated them into the desk, finishing the corners with columns." Removable panels allow cables to run from laptop computers. Behind the desk, a full-sized credenza is filled with bookshelves. The condo’s metal window frames were given a faux finish to match the cherry wood, creating a complete and satisfying whole.
