Risk Management Tips

• AIG advises us to avoid very predictable lifestyle patterns. “Don’t
have coffee at the same place every day,” recommends Ross Buchmueller, president
of AIG Private Client Group. “Don’t walk the same way to work each day; change
your patterns now and then.” He also advises us to be aware of our surroundings.
“Learn to see the person standing at the corner.”
• David Little of
Sheldon Little Associates says most people have a mental barrier to cross before
they start practicing personal risk management. But he believes most of us can
manage the day-to-day security issues ourselves: “Most of it is common sense.”
• In addition to controls at gates and doorways at the home and
property boundaries, Little suggests installing security sensors in the driveway
and in bedrooms. A safe-room, where the residents can hide for at least 10
minutes (or long enough for the police to be called and arrive) in the event of
an intruder, is also a good idea. He urges us to avoid parking in designated
bays in the garage, and to get thorough background checks on all domestic
help. Back to main article: "Insuring Our Personal Security"
