The best-selling helicopters are made by Sikorsky, Bell
Helicopter, Eurocopter and AugustaWestland. All of these brands have their
devotees, but a few helicopters are known as best in class for various reasons.
One of the best-selling midrange helicopters, this
single-engine jet model is highly maneuverable and seats seven. With a maximum
cruising speed of 140 knots and a range of 300 nautical miles, it boasts both
the top speed and longest range in the single-engine class of choppers. Price:
$2.5 million to $3 million.
A twin-engine workhorse widely used in law enforcement and
search and rescue, the Eurocopter EC 135 can also be configured for executive
use. This model seats up to seven passengers and flies at a maximum of 140
knots, with a range of roughly 370 nautical miles. Though not as sleek as a Bell
or Sikorsky, the EC series (Eurocopter also offers the EC 120 and EC 145) boasts
an attractive price point and rugged dependability. Price: $1 million to $3.5
million.
The best-selling helicopter in the world, the small R-44 has a
piston-driven engine just like a car and is almost as easy to buy and maintain.
The Raven series of helicopters features four-seaters, including the one the
pilot uses. The R-44 has a maximum range of 348 nautical miles (without reserve
fuel) and a cruising speed of 117 knots. This is the ideal helicopter for
someone who wants to become an owner-pilot. A vigorous resale market exists,
supporting plenty of buyers for owners who wish to sell their used birds and
upgrade. Price: $400,000.
This twin-engine four-seater, the most popular and best-known
large helicopter for corporate and military use, has a range of 345 nautical
miles and a cruising speed of 155 knots. Although S-76 models have seen many
missions as military, law enforcement and medical rescue aircraft, the corporate
version is configured to block engine noise and provide a roomy, quiet ride with
luggage space. It can be equipped with a television, minibar, air-conditioning
and computer equipment. Price: $10 million. Back to Main Article: Joining the Rotary Club
