The Gavel and the Grape
Value Judgement
05/03/2004

•  The barrel auctions provide opportunities for savvy oenologists to acquire excellent wines at reasonable prices.

•  Barrel auction winners can have their wine bottled in unusually large bottles, increasing their rarity value.

•  In the live auctions, cult wines, such as Harlan Estate, Screaming Eagle and Colgin Cellars, may fetch top dollar.

•  Unique collections, such as those offered by Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Shafer Vineyards and Far Niente, are expected to appreciate significantly over time.

•  The opportunity to meet vintners and cultivate relationships is, in itself, an excellent investment, since it can secure coveted places on allocation lists.
