Top Dog Shows

The American Kennel Club (AKC) and the Westminster Kennel Club present the two
most important purebred dog shows in the United States. They stage elaborate
championship events designed to win television ratings and the hearts and minds
of dog lovers.
The Westminster is held annually in February at Madison

Garden in New York, while the AKC National has no permanent home or date.
This year, however, they are within weeks of each other. The AKC/Eukanuba
National Championship will be January 14 and 15 in Tampa, Fla. The 130th
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is set for February 13 and 14 at the Garden.
Both enjoy extensive television coverage—AKC simulcasts both evenings on Animal
Planet and Discovery channels, while both evenings of Westminster are shown on
USA Network (with David Frei as expert commentator) and rebroadcast on
NBC.
