Experts advise collectors to follow these steps to reduce their chances of purchasing a forged or stolen piece of art:

• Examine a piece closely during the preview process. Avoid bidding on items unless you have previewed them.

• Before buying a painting, make certain it is listed in the artist’s catalogue raisonné, a complete chronicle of an artist’s known works. Prints are typically listed in a separate catalog. "If you are unable to do your own homework, hire someone," AXA Insurance’s Vivian Ebersman advises.

• Check a reseller’s return policy to make certain it covers problematic artwork, and know the statute of limitations. Most reputable dealers and auction houses offer such policies.
