Hongqiao International Airport (shairport.com; +86.21.6268.8899) is
located in the city’s western suburbs, just eight miles from the center of the
city. Its single, 11,000-foot runway can accommodate any size jet. Because it is
so close to the city, it is a good choice for those flying from within China or
traveling from Hong Kong. However, although Hongqiao is referred to as an
international airport, the Chinese government is unlikely to grant landing
permissions for planes flying directly from other countries.
Pudong
International Airport (shairport.com; +86.21.6884.2008) is located 19 miles east
of the city and is the official international port of entry for Shanghai. Like
the burgeoning city itself, the airport is undergoing constant renovations and
upgrades. In 2005, the airport added an additional runway to help alleviate
overcrowding. Pudong now handles about 60 percent of Shanghai’s total air
traffic. The drive from Pudong to Shanghai usually takes about 45 minutes, but
the time depends on the city’s frustrating and sometimes harrowing
traffic.
