Executive Travel: Moscow:
City Tips
12/01/2005

Moscow May require a little more in the way of documentation and negotiation than other major cities, but with a little extra preparation it can be successfully navigated. See “The Visa Chase,” page 81 for complete information on acquiring a Russian visa.

Limousine services are available through several companies, including U.S.-based Airport Commuter, 800.496.7945. Taxis generally do not have meters, so a price must be agreed upon before a ride. While public transportation may not be your modus operandi, Moscow’s fabled Metro stations—virtual palaces of marble, chandeliers, stained glass and mosaics—are worth a peek during daylight hours.

Operating an Automobile
Foreigners who choose to drive in Moscow must keep the following on hand: your home drivers license, an international driving permit with a Russian-language insert, an insurance certificate from your home insurer, a passport and visa, the vehicle registration certificate and, if you drive in from another country, a customs document stating that you will take the car when you leave Russia.

Weather
The climate in Moscow is akin to that of the northern United States, varying from lows of –20 in the winter to as high as 100 in the summer. July and August are the hottest months and is the time when many locals take vacations. April and May tend to be muddy as the winter snows melt. The best weather occurs in late spring, early summer and fall. Although Moscow winters are harsh, some say the city is at its most beautiful when covered with new snow.

Navigation Negation
Leave your GPS devices at home. They are not allowed in Russia except with written permission.
