Free Market for Internal Organs

Livers would cost $35,000 and kidneys would run about $15,000 if the government allowed people to buy and sell organs for transplantation, according to an article by economist Gary Becker in the April issue of Capital Ideas, published by the University of Chicago Business School. Becker argues that allowing such a market to operate would provide more organs for transplantation (at a cheaper cost than todayÕs transplants) than the current system, which relies on altruism.
