Number up nearly 40 percent.

Small family foundations are a new growth industry, according to a February 22 article in the Baltimore Sun. Less than a third of family foundations in the United States have more than $250,000 in assets, and two-thirds have less than $1 million. The article reports that, according to preliminary estimates by the Foundation Center, the number of family foundations rose nearly 40 percent between 2000 and 2005, and the number is growing now by about six per day.
